As the academic year approached its recess period, one of the university’s lecturers posed a challenge to Petronila, the founder of the foundation. He urged her to use her vocal nature and energy for something resourceful during the break. This simple challenge ignited a spark within Petronila, and she was determined to make a difference.

Taking a bold step, Petronila approached the director of Peace Cop Kenya, expressing her readiness to volunteer. Her enthusiasm and vision for mobilizing university students from across the city to promote peace during the upcoming elections were met with open arms. In just one week, 150 students from six universities were ready to serve their country by conducting civic awareness campaigns in the streets of Nairobi.

This unique volunteer program, where university students actively advocated for peaceful elections, caught the attention of various entities, including the Ministry of Gender and the 1195 GBV Helpline. These zealous youths were onboarded into campaigns that aimed to spread awareness about the importance of protecting women and children during elections. Their efforts reached the streets and informal settlements, touching lives in places like Mathare and Kibera slums.

These early campaigns set the foundation for a youth movement that would go on to transform the country. Petronila discovered her unique ability to mobilize and lead young people in rallying behind a worthy cause. She also recognized the potential of volunteerism as a pathway to meaningful change and employment for the youth.

After the elections, the fire within these young change-makers continued to burn brightly. Petronila realized that there was a need to do more. Their passion and determination led to invitations from organizations seeking their assistance in a volunteer capacity. The Sick Cell Society of Kenya, Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society of Kenya, and UNV Kenya were among the earliest believers in the potential of Enkare Oltau Foundation.

Through these platforms, volunteers had the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills acquired during their university education. They engaged in fundraising, counselling, report writing, and social skills development. These experiences not only allowed them to serve their communities but also opened doors to job opportunities in these organizations.

For Petronila, graduating with a double major degree in sociology and peace studies was just the beginning of her journey. She knew her calling included championing the causes she was passionate about, rallying like-minded young people to support her, and addressing the gap in the job industry through corporate volunteerism.

In the process, Enkare Oltau Foundation was born, a testament to the power of youthful passion, determination, and a bold move to volunteer.
